Sara was reading to me before school this morning. Part of the phonics she has been working on lately is the "magic e" or the "silent e" as I call it. Anyway, the book she had to read for school was about a snake and an ape and they lived in a forest. So she was reading along about the nice friendship between the ape and the snake and how wonderful it was until the evil loggers came along and started cutting down trees and then the forest caught fire. And so the ape and the snake had to go get the ape king and the snake king to scare away the evil loggers. And by the last page they were successful and the forest was once again at peace since the evil loggers left. Now, in all fairness, I don't think the actual word evil was used, but I'm still not sure exactly how the fire started. Everything was just suddenly burning. So once we finally reached the end, we had a little chat with Sara about the book. We started by asking her what the book was about and she gave a pretty clear synopsis. Then we had the following conversation:
Joe & I: Sara, do you think we should cut down the trees?
Sara: No
Joe & I: Why not?
Sara: Because they may fall on someone and they would really get hurt.
So, there you have it, Sara's environmental logic... Of course, then we had to explain to her why I was laughing so hard--she was very perplexed. And then we explained our view of the trees...
